5 Ways To Feel Healthy While Flying

Airports & Airplanes can wreak havoc on your body. Even short flights can throw our bodies off and food choices along the way can be limited. A tiny bit of preparation and awareness can definitely help us to feel healthy and vibrant when we exit that plane. Here are 5 tips to help you feel healthy while flying.


  1. Buy a large WATER

Whenever I fly I always get through security and beeline straight for the convenience style store. Even though it can be expensive I buy a 1 Liter bottle of water to take with me on the plane. The stale air on airplanes can leave you dry and dehydrated, so having your own large bottle of water while on your flight will remind you to drink more than less water. TIP: Try to finish the whole bottle before the end of the flight.


  1. Pick up or Pack a Salad

The options for healthy meals on airplanes can be limited, and on shorter flights sometimes only snacks are available. In order to make sure I am not only eating when I’m hungry, but also eating healthily I pack or buy a salad (from one of the stores in the airport). If I have to buy one, I look for a salad with darker leafy greens and more of a vinaigrette dressing. If that isn’t possible, even a caesar salad can work. Just pick out the croutons and use a little less than half the packet of dressing for flavor. This will help ensure you are able to eat a healthier meal WHEN you are hungry without calorie guilt!


  1. Bring Snacks

A lot of flights offer snacks that are either filled with sugar and sodium or snacks that aren’t filling enough to curb the hunger.  Packing a couple small snacks into your carry on bag can really save the day! For savory cravings I always pack some nuts.  (almonds, cashews, pistachios, peanuts etc.). They are easy to pack and can give you some protein too. For a sweet treat I buy the organic packaged pomegranate seeds.  The packaging will hold up until you get on the plane, and it’s always a good idea to have some fruit. Lastly for a veggie option I cut up some bell peppers (red, yellow, orange) and bring along a small container of hummus for dipping. These small types of snacks can keep you happy and healthy for the duration of your flight.


  1. Stretch it out!

Sitting in a flexed position for a long period of time can tighten up the hips and cause stiffness in your back. On longer flights try to get up at least every couple hours to walk the length of the cabin a few times. This will get your blood circulating through your body, while also extending you hip flexors and spine. If there is space even touching your toes for a few moments can feel great for the body and open up the lower back.


  1. Magnesium

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer. In order to keep me relaxed on flights I take a magnesium supplement before getting on the plane. This is a natural way to relax my muscles and avoid tension over the course of the flight. It can also assist with being able to sleep on the plane ....zzzzzzzzzz
